Britain: Former Liberian President Is Transferred to British Prison

Version 0 of 1. Former President Charles Taylor of Liberia arrived in Britain on Tuesday to serve the remainder of his 50-year sentence in an unspecified prison. After a four-year trial by the Special Court for Sierra Leone, temporarily based in The Hague, an appeals court recently upheld his conviction for aiding and abetting war crimes and crimes against humanity in Sierra Leone. The 65-year-old former leader had tried in vain to be sent to Rwanda. In a recent letter to the court he said it would be easier for his family to visit him in Africa. He also said he feared being attacked in a British prison by people from West Africa, where he had long operated as a warlord. |
