The derailment to the rear of the train also caused debris to fall on a nearby road, British Transport Police added.
During the incident, the police helicopter was called to help with the "search for a railway container following a derailment".
The National Police Air Service tweeted it "certainly isn't something we look for on a regular basis".

The derailment is likely to cause problems until the weekend, Network Rail said.
