BEIJING — A 60-year-old Australian and three Tibetan porters were killed by an avalanche in the Mount Everest area of Tibet this week, Xinhua, the state news agency, reported on Wednesday, citing local authorities.

The four who were killed were among a larger group who had been camping “without permission” Sunday night in “a restricted area” at the foot of Mount Everest, Xinhua said. They were part of a tour group organized by the Tibet Longda International Travel Agenc, consisting of four Australian tourists and six Tibetans, who were presumably guiding or helping the Australians.

Xinhua reported this week that 86 tourists, all but 13 of them Chinese, had been stranded Monday at the north base camp of Mount Everest, at 17,000 feet, and the nearby Rongbuk Monastery because of heavy snowfall. Rescuers manage to reach the tourists on Monday and evacuate them. No casualties were reported.
