Katharine Viner, Lee Glendinning and Madhvi Pankhania received a nomination for the Guardian’s multimedia interactive “Firestorm”, which explored the story of the Holmes family during the devastating Dunalley bushfires. Viner is editor-in-chief of Guardian Australia and deputy editor of the Guardian worldwide. Deputy political editor Katharine Murphy received a nomination for commentary, analysis, opinion and critique for a body of work including “Julia Gillard: where did it all go wrong?”, “Tony Abbott has another rival in the toughest race of his life – himself” and “Tony Abbott keeps the Catholic faith, quietly”. The deadline for the award nominations came just three months after Guardian Australia’s launch. Fairfax led Australian media organisations with 27 nominations, followed by the ABC with 18 and News Corp Australia with 12. NITV/SBS received seven nods for their work, Getty Images received five, Seven and Seven West three, the Global Mail two, the Nine Network three, and Channel Ten received two nominations. “The quality and breadth of the work that came before the Walkley advisory board for final judging can only inspire great optimism about the future of journalism in this country,” said the Walkley advisory board chair, Laurie Oakes.
