A convicted killer has admitted the murder of a man who was stabbed while going to the aid of a neighbour in a Hertfordshire village.
Ian John McLoughlin, 55, pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to the murder of Graham Buck, in Little Gaddesden, last July, while he was a day release prisoner.
Mr Buck, 66, was stabbed when he responded to cries for help from his neighbour, Francis Cory-Wright, who was being robbed.
McLoughlin is due to be sentenced later.
The court heard McLouglin turned up at Mr Cory-Wright's house claiming to need help setting up a charity supporting elderly ex-offenders.

But McLoughlin suddenly grabbed him and demanded to know where he kept his "gold and silver".
He tied Mr Cory-Wright to the bed, stuffed silver family heirlooms into a pillowcase and demanded his bank cards and Pin numbers.
Father-of-three Mr Buck, who lived two doors away from Mr Cory-Wright, went to help him after hearing shouting in his front garden.
McLoughlin told police he was "sorry" for what he did to Mr Buck.
He said he was confronted by Mr Buck as he tried to flee Mr Cory-Wright's house, and stabbed him in the neck.
Witnesses described seeing Mr Buck with his throat slashed "wide open", prosecutor Ann Evans said.
In October 1983 McLoughlin was jailed for 10 years for the manslaughter of Len Delgatty, who was 49 and lived in Stoke Newington. He had head injuries from a hammer attack and had been strangled.
The sentence for the manslaughter of Mr Delgatty was reduced to eight years on appeal.
McLoughlin was convicted of the murder of barman Peter Halls, aged 56, in Brighton in July 1992. He had stabbed him in the neck. He was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 25 years.
McLoughlin had served 22 years of the sentence when he was allowed out on day release. |
