Pavlo Lapshyn, 25, admitted murder at the Old Bailey, as well as plotting to cause explosions near mosques in the West Midlands. Lapshyn, a postgraduate student from Dnipropetrovsk in Ukraine, is due to be sentenced on Friday.
He was living in Birmingham while on a temporary work placement in the city, and had been in the country less than a week when he killed Mr Saleem.
The grandfather of 22 was taken to the city's Heartlands Hospital, but was confirmed dead shortly after arriving.
Lapshyn was arrested almost a week after an explosion near the Kanzul Iman Masjid mosque in Tipton on 12 July.
