Homeland star Damian Lewis is to appear opposite Nicole Kidman in Werner Herzog's Queen of the Desert, the biopic of pioneering adventurer and spy Gertrude Bell, who travelled widely in the middle east in the first half of the 20th century. Deadline reports that Lewis will take the role of Lieutenant Charles Doughty-Wylie, the British army office with whom Bell had an unconsummated love affair before and during the first world war. They exchanged love letters from 1913 until Doughty-Wylie was killed during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. Herzog's film has been in the works for some time, with Kidman taking over the lead role from Naomi Watts, who had originally been cast as Bell alongside Robert Pattinson as Lawrence of Arabia.
