A force spokesman said the blaze was a "lorry fire" and that "a few retail premises have been evacuated due to the smoke in the area". Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were sent into the building but were later pulled out, a fire service spokesman said.
He added road closures were in place on Scarsdale Road and Derbyshire Lane and that delays were likely on Chesterfield Road. Residents in the area were advised to close their doors and windows.
South Yorkshire Police said road closures on Scarsdale Road, Derbyshire Lane and Chesterfield Road were lifted at 02:20 BST.
