Israel: Jerusalem Mayor Re-elected
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/23/world/middleeast/israel-jerusalem-mayor-re-elected.html Version 0 of 1. The secular mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat, won a second term on Tuesday after fending off a hard-fought challenge. His opponent, Moshe Lion, conceded early Wednesday with 70 percent of the vote counted and Mr. Barkat holding a 55-to-42 percent lead. Mr. Lion was backed by right-wing and ultra-Orthodox forces, who were seeking to regain control of the city they dominated until Mr. Barkat’s election in 2008. His first term was characterized by high-profile tourism and cultural projects meant to improve the economy and halt an exodus of secular residents. |
