The African Union submitted a formal request to the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday to defer, for at least a year, the trials of Kenya’s president and deputy president in the International Criminal Court at The Hague in order to allow them to deal with the aftermath of last month’s deadly terrorist attack at the Westgate mall in Nairobi. The African Union said the attack showed that “Kenya is a front-line state in the fight against terrorism” and that the trials would prevent President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy, William Ruto, from “fulfilling their constitutional responsibilities.” Both are accused of crimes against humanity related to violence that roiled Kenya after disputed 2007 elections.
