Two lanes northbound between the junctions for Burnham-on-Sea and Bridgwater have since reopened. Both carriageways, between the junctions for Burnham-on-Sea and Bridgwater, have since reopened.
Supt Chris Weigold said it was a "significant incident" which had left police with no option but to close the motorway. The Highways Agency said traffic had returned to normal at the scene of the incident.
However, the vehicles have now been removed and the force said the road was "expected to open shortly".
