Police said the woman fell from a bridge between junction seven, at Great Barr, and the junction with the M5.Police said the woman fell from a bridge between junction seven, at Great Barr, and the junction with the M5.
The northbound carriageway between the two junctions is completely closed with traffic queuing back to junction five at Castle Bromwich. The northbound carriageway between the two junctions was completely closed for about five hours with the southbound side also closed for a shorter time.
Police said it could be closed for "some time". Officers said all lanes on the southbound side had been reopened. The closures created long traffic delays queuing back to junction five at Castle Bromwich.
However, queues were stretching back to the junction with the M6 toll road. Police are appealing for help to identify the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
PC Jason Stacey, from West Midlands Police, said: "At this stage we have been unable to identify any information about the woman and are appealing for help to trace who she is.
"Although this happened early in the morning there would have been a number of drivers on the road who may have witnessed it."
