Everton FC has paid tribute to a 10-year-old boy hit and killed by a bus three days after meeting his heroes.

James Greenop was knocked down by a bus near the Matchworks on Speke Road, Liverpool, on Tuesday.

The club sent a shirt for his "final journey", flowers and a signed letter from manager Roberto Martinez.

James's family has set up an online fund-raising page in his memory to collect donations for Wirral Autistic Society.

The "devoted" Everton fan had a kick-around on the pitch at half-time at Goodison Park during the team's 2-1 victory over Hull City.

Before the match, James also had a tour of the stadium with Everton In The Community and met a number of players who signed his kit.

"He told us it had been 'the best day of my life'," said his parents Helen and Russell.

They added: "We would like to thank Everton Football Club for sending flowers, a signed letter of condolence from their manager, and a kit for James to wear for his final journey.

"They have been really supportive."

His parents have set up a Just Giving page for a cause special to the "family's heart".
