Rail commuters heading for London are facing severe disruption because of fallen trees in Hertfordshire. About 150,000 properties are still without power as a result of the storm-force winds that have swept across the eastern region.
UK Power Networks said the high winds had caused "extensive" damage and the number of properties without power was likely to rise.
Company staff and British Red Cross volunteers were on hand to help people in the worst affected areas.
At the height of the storm, 300,000 households were without electricity.
Engineers are working throughout the day to restore power.
Train services suspended
Rail commuters heading for London have also faced severe disruption because of the storm with trees bringing down power cables and blocking the lines.

All services on Greater Anglia and Stansted Express trains are now suspended until 12:00 GMT. Greater Anglia services are currently suspended on all routes until further notice, with customers being advised not to travel for the rest of the day.
About 100,000 properties across the east of England are without power as a result of the storm. The Stansted Express has also been suspended.
Tracy Elsey, communications manager for UK Power Networks, told the BBC that the number of people without power in the east had risen significantly.
"In our East of England region, which goes from Essex up to the North Norfolk coast, we have seen a huge rise in reported power cuts. We have got 100,000 properties off power in the East," she said.
Forecasters said the storm was set to reach its peak in the east between 08:00 and 11:00 GMT, with gusts between 60mph (97km/h) and 80mph (129km/h).
Train operators said customers could experience delays to services throughout the day.
The Environment Agency has so far issued two flood warnings for the region.
One is for the River Witham in North Witham, Essex, with the other for Peterborough Brooks, affecting northern parts of Peterborough, Peakirk and Eye.

The train operator says it is looking to resume a limited service later this morning operating via Hertford. The train operator is advising passengers not to travel, with any Monday tickets being valid for Tuesday.
