The Daily Mail, the Daily Mirror, the Sun and the Daily Telegraph all use a picture of Princess Diana minutes before her car crashed in Paris. The picture of the princess in the back of the Mercedes was released at the start of the inquest into the death of the princess and Dodi Al Fayed. The Daily Express says it was a day of dramatic claims and counter-claims. The Guardian says the inquest began with 30 lawyers, 11 jurors and one angry billionaire - Mohamed Al Fayed. 'Unsubtle stunt' According to the Guardian's main story, PM Gordon Brown has set the stage for a general election announcement. It says his trip to Iraq was part of a carefully cultivated timetable. It was, says the Express, the least subtle stunt in British political history. Electioneering is the real agenda, says the Independent. For the Mirror, Mr Brown finds himself in the ridiculous position of being criticised for going to Iraq and seen as running away when he does not. Arctic heatwave The Times says the Conservatives will unveil further tax cut plans in any autumn general election campaign. Shadow chancellor George Osborne says money raised from green taxes will be used to fund personal tax cuts. The Independent, meanwhile, returns to the subject of global warming with a report that parts of the Arctic experienced a July heatwave. It says scientists were amazed to record temperatures of 22C where normal average temperatures were 5C. Red hot alert A number of papers report that a mysterious cloud of acrid smoke sparked a major terror alert in central London on Monday evening. Police sealed off streets as shoppers feared attack, the Sun says. Eventually, the Times says, fire crews with breathing apparatus tracked down the source - a Thai restaurant where extra hot chillies were being fried. The chef tells the Times: "The chilli doesn't smell like chemicals - I'm a bit confused." |
