Russia's embassy said it was checking reports of the incident, but was quoted by one news agency as saying there were no Russian military advisers in Yemen. Initial reports said they were Russian, but Russia's embassy said the victims were in fact Belarusians who had been working in Yemen on private contracts.
"Our military co-operation [with Yemen] has been suspended for the time being, so we have no instructors. Perhaps they were CIS [Commonwealth of Independent States] citizens. This information is currently being verified," an embassy employee told RIA Novosti. The Belarusian Foreign Ministry said it was checking the reports, but could not confirm the victims were from Belarus.
The army has in the past frequently employed foreign advisers, including Russians, and is currently fighting an insurgency involving al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). Earlier, a Russian embassy official noted that military co-operation with Yemen had been "suspended for the time being", and that there were no instructors in the country.
The manager of the hotel, Mohammed al-Shami, said the two victims and two other Russians had been staying there for about four months. On Monday, he added, they had been dressed in civilian clothes and waiting for a taxi when the shooting took place.
