(about 1 hour later)
A judge in Alexandria on Wednesday sentenced 14 women who participated in an Islamist protest last month to 11 years in prison, the state news media reported. In addition, seven girls ranging from 15 to 17 years old were also sentenced to an indeterminate term at a juvenile facility for joining the protest. The sentences, after an uncommonly swift trial, highlighted the severity of the military-led government’s crackdown on Islamists since the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi in July. Also on Wednesday, prosecutors ordered the arrests of two of the best known liberal activists in the country, Ahmed Maher and Alaa Abdel Fattah, for organizing an “unauthorized” protest.
