Around 100 houses have been evacuated in the Beechmount area of west Belfast because of a security alert. An overnight security alert in the Beechmount area of west Belfast has ended.
It follows the discovery of a suspicious vehicle in St Mary's Gardens on Thursday evening. Army bomb experts were called to examine a car in St Mary's Gardens, but nothing suspicious was found.
A nearby community centre has been opened for residents who have had to leave their homes. During the night about 100 families were moved out of their homes.
Army bomb experts are at the scene. West Belfast SDLP MLA Alex Attwood condemned those behind the alert. A nearby community centre was opened for residents who had to leave their homes.
"Again it is the citizens of west Belfast who have been put out of their homes and children have been put out of their beds," he said.
"Those behind this security alert must be condemned outright. Anyone with any information must contact the PSNI."
