In a night for “people with bad voices”, bedroom producer Harley Streten, aka Flume, has taken home four Aria awards after a phenomenal year following the release of his debut album.

Streten won best breakthrough artist, best male artist, producer of the year and his self-titled release won best dance album.

In his acceptance speech for best male artist, Streten said his win was out of the ordinary, and the “coolest thing about winning” was that he is not a singer but won for his work as a producer.

"I actually did a bit of research and found out that never in the history of the Arias has someone who doesn't sing won this award,” he said.

"I'm not a frontman. I prefer to spend my time sitting in a dark room, in front of a laptop.

"So hopefully it opens the floodgates for producers around Oz and people with bad voices in general."

The West Australian psychedelic rock group Tame Impala won best rock album and best group, and their album Lonerism took the gong for album of the year.

Three artists who got their break on Australian Idol also had a good night, with Jessica Mauboy winning best female artist, Guy Sebastian taking home best pop release and best live act, and Matt Corby winning song of the year for Resolution.

“We are so deadly in this country,” said Mauboy in her acceptance speech. “And we forget that, we really do. We just need to pick up our game and have fun and be honest.”

Best blues and roots album went to Russell Morris’s Sharkmouth, Illy’s Bring it Back took best urban album, and Karnivool’s Asymmetry grabbed the gong for best hard rock/heavy metal, with guitarist Andrew Goddard thanking Aria for the “bogan award”.

The Australian music industry awards were held in Sydney on Sunday night, with special guest appearances from local and international artists including Lorde and Alicia Keys.

The Jezabels singer Hayley Mary sang the Divinyls’ Pleasure and Pain in tribute to the band’s singer Chrissy Amphlett, who died in April.

Air Supply were inducted into the Aria hall of fame and the founder of Mushroom records, Michael Gudinski, was recognised as an Aria industry icon.

One Direction thanked fans via a prerecorded message after winning best international artist.
