He has since been released on bail until January. A 20-year-old man was arrested at the address where the device was found on suspicion of possessing abusive images.
Both men have been released on bail.
Police found the device during a raid in Mellor Street, Patricroft, on Thursday.
"A cordon was put in place and a number of residents were evacuated as a precautionary measure," police said in a statement.
"Specialist officers assessed the device and were later able to confirm it was no longer a threat to the community."
