A police spokesman said the woman's injuries were "potentially life changing". A force spokesman said the woman, 32, who is from Exeter, has injuries which are "potentially life changing".
Her car, which is registered to Essex, is being recovered along with a white Mercedes Sprinter van which is registered to Stockton-on-Tees, in north-east England. The road, and southbound carriageway which was closed to allow the air ambulance to land, have since reopened.
Police said they were not aware of anyone else who had been injured in the crash. The closures resulted in traffic delays.
The southbound carriageway, which was closed to allow the air ambulance to land, has since reopened but the northbound carriageway remains closed.
However, police said it was expected to reopen shortly.
The closure resulted in long tailbacks of traffic.
