Mr Cameron met Mr Mandela twice, once in South Africa while leader of the opposition, and in London in 2010. Labour leader Ed Miliband tweeted that the world had "lost the global hero of our age".
Other senior political figures in the UK have paid their respects. He added: "Nelson Mandela showed us the true meaning of courage, hope, and reconciliation."
Mr Miliband continued: "Deep condolences to Graca Machel (Mr Mandela's wife), his family and friends and to all the people of South Africa."
Mr Mandela led South Africa's transition from white-minority rule in the 1990s, after 27 years in prison.
He had been receiving intense home-based medical care for a lung infection after three months in hospital.
