Somalia: Suicide Bomber Attacks Convoy in the North
Version 0 of 1. A suicide car bomber struck a security force’s convoy on Thursday in northern Somalia, killing at least seven people and wounding 37, local officials and witnesses said. The convoy, which was attacked in the town of Boosaaso in the semiautonomous region of Puntland, included members of the Puntland Marine Forces and two foreigners who were training the local security forces. Details about the casualties were not immediately available, and no group claimed responsibility after the explosion. President Hassan Sheik Mohamud of Somalia condemned the attack, saying that “terrorists have lost the war on the battlefield and are now devoting all their efforts in harming innocent civilians.” The Shabab rebel movement has been waging an insurgency for years to impose a strict interpretation of Islamic law in Somalia, but Puntland has been relatively peaceful compared with other parts of the country. |
