An injured horse has been shot dead by police after being hit by a car in Cambridgeshire.

The horse was one of two loose on the B1166 in Parson Drove, near Wisbech, involved in an accident with two cars at about 06:20 GMT.

A police spokesman said one of them ran off, but the other had to be put down at the scene.

Firearms officers consulted a vet before shooting the animal, he added. Neither driver was injured.

The road was closed in both directions following the incident and reopened shortly before 09:00 GMT.

The horse's owner has been contacted, police said.
