Flights cancelled as fog grounds more than 100 planes Heathrow flights resume as thick fog lifts
(about 2 hours later)
Thick fog has led to the cancellation of more than 100 flights at London's Heathrow and City airports. Dense fog has lifted from London's Heathrow Airport after causing at least 125 flight cancellations but passengers there are continuing to face delays.
At City every flight until noon was cancelled or delayed. Inbound flights were diverted to Stansted which, along with Gatwick, was unaffected. A spokesman said more cancellations were possible as staff dealt with the backlog.
There are also delays and passengers have been advised to check with their airlines. London City Airport remains shrouded in fog. Every flight this morning was cancelled or delayed.
Heathrow Airport said 80 flights had been cancelled, while just one flight had landed at Southampton airport. At Southampton, the fog has cleared so planes are now taking off and landing - it cancelled 16 flights this morning.
The cancellations - which included flights to Berlin, Paris, Belfast and Dublin - were mostly short haul journeys, Heathrow Airport said. A Heathrow spokeswoman said passengers arriving at the airport could expect average delays of an hour and those departing could be held up for 40 minutes.
Three inbound flights were diverted to Stansted, which is unaffected by the fog. Luton and Gatwick have reported no cancellations and only minor delays. The cancellations - which included flights to Berlin, Paris, Belfast and Dublin - were mostly short-haul journeys, she said.

A spokeswoman for the airport said: "It's ever so thick here. There's just nothing moving." She said she was unable to provide figures for the number of flight cancellations, but the departures board showed at least 30 cancellations this afternoon.
