Tributes have been paid to a 23-year-old teacher who has died after a road crash near Machynlleth in Powys.

Mared Elfyn, from Blaenau Ffestiniog, was a "lovely person" said the head teacher at Ysgol Bro Ddyfi school.

Ms Elfyn died after her car was in collision with another vehicle on the A487 Glandyfi straight near Derwenlas on Wednesday.

Her family issued a statement describing her as "an extremely popular teacher" after her death on Friday.

They added that she was a "lively and gregarious character who enjoyed getting involved in all activities".

Her parents said: "We offer unlimited gratefulness to Mared for enriching our lives to the extent to which she did.

"She died much too young and we will never be able to fill the void she left behind."

Ms Elfyn's family also expressed their gratitude to all the staff in the intensive care unit at Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth where she was taken after the collision.

The head teacher at Ysgol Bro Ddyfi in Machynlleth said everyone at the school was deeply saddened by her death.

'Devastated'

"Mared was a popular teacher with pupils and staff, a really lovely person," he said.

Ms Elfyn had been at the school for three years, originally joining as part of her teacher training but then becoming a full-time member of staff two years ago, he added.

"Everyone at the school is devastated by the news. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this very difficult time," Mr Jones added.

Insp Dyfed Bolton of Dyfed-Powys Police said: "Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Mared's family and friends at this tragic time."

Dyfed-Powys Police appealed for anyone with information about the collision to contact them on 101.
