Two injured in Colorado school shooting Two injured in Centennial, Colorado, school shooting
(35 minutes later)
Two people have been injured in a shooting at a Colorado high school near Denver, US media report. Two students have been injured in a school shooting in Colorado, the Arapahoe County sheriff has said.
Police have said there is an "active shooter situation" inside Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colorado. A student believed to be the gunman who brought a shotgun into the school has been found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, he said.
The school and others in the area have been placed on lockdown. The sheriff said the gunman was looking for a specific teacher, who left the building. A student confronted the gunman and was shot.
The shooting was reported the day before the anniversary of the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, in which 20 schoolchildren and six workers were killed at a primary school. It is unclear how the other student received a minor injury.
Students could be seen on television footage streaming out of the school in single-file lines with their hands above their heads. The school and others in the area were placed on lockdown but Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson indicated the threat had ended.
The high school is just eight miles (13km) east of Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, which was the site of a mass school shooting in 1999 which left 14 students dead. Upon the initial reports of a school shooting, heavily armed police trained in "active shooter" scenarios stormed the building, ordering students outside with their hands over their heads.
Inside, they found the dead suspected gunman and two other injured students, one of whom had suffered a minor wound, Mr Robinson said.
Police have not yet released the name of the suspect.
The school has more than 2,200 students and 70 classrooms.
