Edinburgh's Christmas: Seat part falls from Star Flyer ride Edinburgh's Christmas: Star Flyer stays closed for checks
(about 3 hours later)
Safety checks are being carried out after a large piece of plastic fell off a Christmas fairground attraction in Edinburgh. A 200ft (60m) carnival ride in Edinburgh is to remain closed until Sunday after a large piece of plastic fell off the attraction.
The plastic, which was from the underside of a seat, fell to the ground from the 60m (195ft) Star Flyer in St Andrew Square. Organisers of Edinburgh's Christmas said the Star Flyer would stay shut to allow full safety checks to be carried out.
The move was also in anticipation of strong winds forecast for Saturday.

The Star Flyer is one of the star attractions of Edinburgh's Christmas. Event organisers Underbelly said public safety was "of paramount importance".
In a statement, event organisers said: "At 9.30pm, a piece of plastic from the underside of one of the seat units of the Star Flyer fell off. A statement released on Saturday read: "Star Flyer will therefore be closed to allow for full safety checks to be carried out, and in anticipation of strong winds forecast for later today.
"This was not needed for the safety of the seat or the ride and at no point was the safety of our customers jeopardised. "We expect the ride to be reopened on Sunday 15 December once it has passed its tests.
"Detailed safety checks will be carried out and the Star Flyer will reopen once those checks have been satisfied." "We apologise for the incident last night which did not have any impact on the safety of the ride."
Tickets for Saturday's rides can either be refunded or exchanged for another date at the event's box office.
