Men arrested in Belfast and Lurgan to face terror charges Colin Duffy among three terror accused
(about 5 hours later)
Three men have been charged with terrorism offences including conspiracy to murder members of the security forces. Prominent County Armagh republican Colin Duffy has appeared in court charged with IRA membership and conspiracy to murder.
Two of the men have been charged over a gun attack on police vehicles in north Belfast earlier this month. Two other men appeared at Belfast Magistrate's Court along with him.
Police vehicles were hit with shots from an assault rifle on the Crumlin Road on the night of 5 December. In court were Mr Duffy, 46, of Forest Lane, Lurgan, Henry Fitzsimons, 45, of no fixed abode, and 52-year-old Alex McCrory of Sliabh Dubh View, Belfast.
The three men, aged 46, 47 and 52, are to appear at Belfast Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. The latter two are charged with trying to murder members of the PSNI on Belfast's Crumlin Road on 5 December.
The two younger men are charged with aiding and abetting the attempted murder of police on Crumlin Road on 5 December and aiding and abetting the possession of firearms with intent to endanger life on the same date. All three are also charged with conspiracy to possess firearms and explosives with intent to endanger life, conspiring to murder and belonging to a proscribed organisation, namely the Irish Republican Army.
All three are charged with conspiracy to murder members of the security forces, conspiracy to possess explosives with intent to endanger life, possession of firearms with intent to endanger life and membership of a proscribed organisation. Mr McCrory and Mr Fitzsimons were both charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life on 5 December in Belfast.
The men were arrested in Belfast and Lurgan on Sunday. None of the defendants applied for bail. All three were remanded in custody until 14 January.
In the 5 December attack, two police vehicles were towing digital warning signs behind them when the convoy came under fire from the Herbert Street area. In the attack on police on 5 December, two police vehicles were hit by gunfire from assault rifles.
Two of the vehicles and one of the signs was hit by the gunfire. Mr Duffy gave a thumbs up sign to supporters who cheered from the public gallery as the three men were led away.
It is understood those behind the attack built a platform on Herbert Street, from where the shots were fired.
