The Pope has done it, Barack Obama and David Cameron have done it, and now a farmer from County Tipperary has become the latest famous subject of a "selfie".

The self-taken photograph of PJ Ryan was submitted by his daughter Aisling to the Irish Farmers Journal's Selfie on the Farm competition.

"Dad was helping my younger sister with her agricultural science project when he took the picture with his salers in the background," she said.

The winner was decided by whoever received the most likes on Facebook.

It was a landslide victory for Mr Ryan's photograph, which was liked by more than 1,600 people, over half more than his nearest rival.

"Selfie" was named as word of the year by Oxford Dictionaries, which suggested its frequency in the English language had increased by 17,000% in the last year.

While the Irish Farmers Journal's contest has tapped into the popular craze, it is not the first time this year that one of its competitions has gone viral.

While many of the photographs submitted for its July contest captured ingenious responses to the summer heatwave, including a few swimming pools made from hay bales, the contest was won by a picture of a cow on a trampoline.
