Strictly Come Dancing: All-female final under way Abbey Clancy wins Strictly Come Dancing 2013
(35 minutes later)
Three hopefuls are battling it out for the Strictly Come Dancing glitterball trophy in the first all-female final. Abbey Clancy has won Strictly Come Dancing 2013.
Model Abbey Clancy, actress Natalie Gumede and newsreader Susanna Reid are in the running to win the show's eleventh series. She won the BBC show's glitterball trophy after a final against actress Natalie Gumede, newsreader Susanna Reid and singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor.
Singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor was eliminated at the start of the second part of the evening's show, leaving the other three to dance one more time. BBC Breakfast presenter Reid was favourite with bookmakers to win the show's 11th series.
BBC Breakfast presenter Reid is favourite with bookmakers to win. Clancy, who was paired with with professional dancer Aljaz Skorjanec, said: "I can't believe this, it's just mad."
Ballroom success would make her the third presenter from the show to triumph, following Natasha Kaplinsky in the first series and sports host Chris Hollins, who won in 2009. She called Strictly "the most perfect experience I've had".
The contestants made a dazzling entrance, wearing red gowns, as they took part in a group dance in front of an enthusiastic crowd. After the cameras stopped rolling, she ran and jumped into the arms of her husband, footballer Peter Crouch - who had only arrived in the studio between the first and second broadcast after scoring a goal for Stoke City earlier in the day.
Reid was the first finalist to take the floor, dancing a quickstep that was met with a positive response by the judges. Clancy's winning dance was a quickstep to Katrina and the Waves' Walking On Sunshine, scoring 38 points.
Reid's professional partner, Kevin Clifton, is appearing in his first series of the programme. Bruno Tonioli called it "absolutely dazzling in its brilliance", while Len Goodman called her "a spectacular dancer".
Slovenian dancer Aljaz Skorjanec, partner to model and TV presenter Clancy, is also competing in Strictly for the first time. Her combined score in the final was 116, putting her second on the leaderboard.
The pair were second to take the dance floor, and their waltz received a perfect score of 40. The model and presenter was a complete amateur going into the contest, prompting Craig Revel Horwood to tell her: "Literally, you came out of the dance gutter" - prompting pantomime gasps in some sections of the studio audience.
Russian-born professional dancer Artem Chigvintsev won with actress Kara Tointon in his first season on the show in 2010 and is paired with former Coronation Street star Gumede in his bid for a second title. She first danced the waltz to Des'ree's song Kissing You. She originally scored 32 for the routine during the first week of the contest - but improved to a perfect 40 in the final.
In their first performance they scored 39 points dancing a cha cha to Boney M's song Rasputin. "That dance should be declared an area of outstanding beauty," said head judge Goodman.
Brendan Cole, who is dancing with singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor, held the trophy aloft with Kaplinsky, but has not won another series since. She then performed a flame-fuelled showdance to Guns N' Roses Sweet Child O' Mine, scoring 39 and prompting Bruno Tonioli to declare: "You rocked my world and you rocked the nation".
The judges scored them a near perfect 39 points for their Viennese waltz to My Favourite Things by Julie Andrews. Slovenian dancer Skorjanec was also competing in Strictly for the first time.
