The blaze at Strykers, which shut in October, started on Sunday evening and caused parts of it to collapse.
About 100 firefighters were there at the height of the fire, which was brought under control by 22:00 GMT. One firefighter suffered an ankle injury.
The single-storey bowling alley is close to a railway line and trains were advised to slow down as they passed the scene.
West Midlands Fire Service said its officers and the police were investigating the cause of the blaze in Shaw Road.
'Possible collapse' | |
Firefighters who were tackling the flames from inside the building were brought back outside when it began to show "severe signs of collapse".
Fire spokesman Mal Fellows described the situation as "dangerous".
He said: "It was an intense fire. Once it had broken through the roof, that's when we had to withdraw due to the possible collapse of the building.
"A building inspector did assess the damage and say how structurally unsafe it was.
"At the height of the blaze we had 13 appliances with crews there, but over 20 support vehicles as well."
Crews from around the West Midlands were called to the city to assist.
Water had to be pumped from a nearby canal to aid the efforts.
In February of last year another disused bowling alley in the city - the AMF bowling centre in Howard Street - was also destroyed by fire. | In February of last year another disused bowling alley in the city - the AMF bowling centre in Howard Street - was also destroyed by fire. |
