A 22-year-old inmate found dead at HMP Lindholme near Doncaster at the weekend died from a stab wound, a post-mortem examination has revealed.

South Yorkshire Police said they were contacted by prison officials following the death on Saturday afternoon.

Two prisoners, one aged 23 and another 26, who were arrested on suspicion of murder have been released on bail and returned to the prison service.

Formal identification of the dead man has not yet taken place, said police.

His family have been informed.

HMP Lindholme is classified as a Category C and D prison with a capacity of more than 1,100.

The former RAF base opened as a prison in 1985 and houses men over the age of 21, including inmates serving life and indeterminate sentences.

An inspection in the summer was highly critical of the jail's wing for low-risk prisoners, which has since been closed.
