Part of the street was cordoned off to allow a forensic examination to take place, but Police Scotland said there was no risk to local residents. The woman was detained at the scene as officers said the death was being treated as suspicious.
Officers have asked anyone who can help with the inquiry to come forward. Police Scotland said the woman was later charged and is expected to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Friday.
