It's harvest time for MagnersThe link between apples, harvest and cider is obvious, but the season is a short push for their product and comes in contrast to its "put everything on ice" theme that proved successful over the summer. Unlikely. Christmas goods are already vying for space alongside Halloween garb in the supermarket aisles, and department stores have opened their decoration grottos for business.Unlikely. More likely it is an effort to sell goods after the summer lull, when people are on holiday or too hot to shop. And with autumn a particularly busy time in the natural world, there is a lot going on that can be appropriated for a marketing campaign. Coloured leaves. Cute animals and birds preparing for winter. Already the marketing calendar has almost as many themes as there are months in the year - the January detox, Valentine's Day, Mothering Sunday, Easter, Father's Day, summer barbecues, Back to School, Halloween, Christmas shopping... if we choose to buy in to it, where will it all end?Already the marketing calendar has almost as many themes as there are months in the year - the January detox, Valentine's Day, Mothering Sunday, Easter, Father's Day, summer barbecues, Back to School, Halloween, Christmas shopping... if we choose to buy in to it, where will it all end?

I adore autumn. As the leaves change colour, and there is a slight mist and frost in the air in the early mornings, it is absolutely wonderful for walks in the parks and up into the mountains. Here in Switzerland the landscape is very similar to the UK, so I don't miss out on the perfect British autumn. It is good to see the retail industry finally acknowledging a fabulous season, even if it is for purely financial reasons, before the onslaught of Christams consumerism.Jay, SwitzerlandI adore autumn. After the various made-up days the card companies have created (Teacher's Day, Grandparent's Day, Boss's Day etc.), it's no surprise to see them trying to create yet another reason to send a card. The "It's the start of a new season" card is by far the most blatant of all. Why would anyone send a card just because one summer has gone and autumn has arrived? I cannot stand the Christmas-in-October nonsense, so if the marketing people have to bang on about anything, autumn's as good as anything; at least it's truly seasonal. That said, I wish they'd all just give it a rest and leave us in peace. In reference to the Christmas in October backlash, I would like to point out that this doesn't seem to have reached certain people. I was in a popular chain pub in Liverpool on 30 September and they had Christmas trees behind the bar. The bar staff thought it was ridiculous. The customers thought it was ridiculous. But management had ordered it. For the record, I too think it is ridiculous.Gary Feldman, London, UKIn reference to the Christmas in October backlash, I would like to point out that this doesn't seem to have reached certain people. Now well into my 50s, I've always regarded autumn as the best time of year. Temperatures are getting cooler, but still comfortable. Summer colour hanging on in the countryside, but the glorious autumn hues coming on strong by the end of October. Blackberry picking and apple gathering, time for jam and chutney making. End of season tidying-up jobs outdoors, and the smell of bonfires. Cool clear nights, great for sky watching. I hated the feeling of being on a constant 'treadmill', harvested by marketers, so I've decided I'm not going to partake in Christmas consumption and instead just do things with family and friends that don't involve getting into debt and lining the pockets of CEOs.I hated the feeling of being on a constant 'treadmill', harvested by marketers, so I've decided I'm not going to partake in Christmas consumption and instead just do things with family and friends that don't involve getting into debt and lining the pockets of CEOs.

I can't put my finger on why I like autumn. In theory it should be a bit depressing, with the nights drawing in, the trees starting to turn bare, and the amount of rain increasing. Perhaps it's the smell. Autumn has the most distinctive smell of the seasons.Simon, Manchester, UKI can't put my finger on why I like autumn. Because of a good summer and warm October so far, people tend to think it is not autumn. But come the end of October when British Summer Time is changed back to GMT, people will realise. Paris is looking even more beautiful than normal now that the leaves are turning! I think that if using autumn as an advertising tool delays the introduction of the Christmas merchandise then it is a positive thing!Ele, Paris, France
