The head of Australia's Winter Olympics team says he is confident athletes will be safe in Russia, despite a suicide bombing six weeks out from the Sochi games.

A blast killed 16 people at the main train station of the southern Russian city of Volgograd on Sunday.

Ian Chesterman, Australia's chef de mission for the Sochi games, said he was confident about the safety arrangements.

"We remain confident in the security arrangements they've been putting in place for Sochi," he told reporters in Melbourne on Monday. "We know at every Olympic Games security is the highest concern.

"We've been given assurances from the highest levels of the Russian government that the security will be very tight in Russia and Sochi.”

The Sochi games begin on 7 February.
