McQueen's film is an adaptation of Northup's autobiography, in which he described the 12 years he worked on plantations in Louisiana, before his eventual release. "There are some places that have a rich investment in what happened there - there are some turned into museums - then there's other places that seem very removed, almost as if it never happened," he said.
