A masked gunman made off with hundreds of pounds after a robbery at a petrol station, police have revealed.

The man, wearing a lavender-coloured balaclava, produced a small handgun after entering the Deer Park service station in Livingston, West Lothian.

He demanded money from the two shop assistants at about 0200 BST on Saturday before making off.

He was last seen in the Knightsbridge area. Police appealed for witnesses to the robbery to get in touch.

A Lothian and Borders police spokesman said: "The service station is very popular with people late at night and we would urge anyone who may have been there around 2am to get in touch.

"We know there were some people in the shop a few minutes before the robbery happened and we would be keen to speak to them in case they saw the suspect hanging around outside or noticed anything suspicious."

The man is described as white, in his early 20s and 5ft 6in to 5ft 10in.

Police say he was wearing a distinctive olive green waist-length jacket with a hood, blue jeans and a pair of black shoes or trainers.

Neither of the assistants in the petrol station were harmed during the incident.
