Four people were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire in a block of flats which was started deliberately.

The fire was started inside a cupboard in the common stairwell of the block in Westfield Road, in the Gorgie area of Edinburgh, at about 00:30.

Four residents were taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, but there was no concern for their condition.

Officers said they believed the fire was started deliberately.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Fortunately, no-one was seriously injured as a result of this incident and officers are now conducting local enquiries to identify whoever was responsible for starting the fire.

"Anyone who remembers seeing anything suspicious in the Westfield Road area in the early hours of Sunday morning should contact police immediately.

"Similarly, anyone with any further information relevant to this investigation is also asked to get in touch."
