The ambulance service said the police car had pulled a car over on the motorway and that another vehicle had gone into the back of it. A police spokesman said the force vehicle had been stationary on the hard shoulder when the collision involving an Audi A3 happened.
The Highways Agency said two lanes had been closed to traffic and the road was expected to be clear by 15:00 GMT. A police officer, a man and a child were taken to hospital, but there were no serious injuries.
A spokeswoman for South Western Ambulance Service said one person had initially been trapped. The Highways Agency said two lanes had been closed to traffic but the road had now fully reopened.
Four walking wounded had gone to Great Western Hospital, in Swindon, but there were no serious injuries, she added. The police spokesman said: "A police officer was extracted from the vehicle by the fire service and taken to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon via land ambulance with shoulder injuries.
"It is expected that he will be released from hospital later today.
"The male driver of the Audi and a child passenger were also taken to hospital as a precaution."
