The British Academy film awards has announced the shortlist for its public-vote Bafta gong, the Rising Star award, which goes to an actor deemed to "have demonstrated exceptional talent, and ... destined to be [a] bright star in the future of cinema".

The five-strong nomination list includes 27-year-old Dane DeHaan, who recently played beat-era killer Lucien Carr alongside Daniel Radcliffe in Kill Your Darlings, and Lupita Nyong'o, 31, the Kenyan who made her feature-film acting debut as Patsey in 12 Years a Slave, and who has already picked up multiple awards for the role in the current awards season.

They are joined by two British actors: 21-year-old George MacKay, whose three high-profile films in 2013 – How I Live Now, Sunshine on Leith and For Those in Peril – were rather improbably released on the same day in the UK; and 20-year-old Will Poulter, who first made his mark in 2008 in Son of Rambow, but has recently consolidated his career with roles in Wild Bill and We're the Millers.

Rounding out the list is Léa Seydoux, 28, Palme d'Or winner for controversial love story Blue Is the Warmest Colour, who appears to be something of an anomaly: having begun her film acting career in 2006, she is already a major figure in the French film world and has appeared in such major Hollywood productions as Inglourious Basterds, Robin Hood and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

Last year the award went to Juno Temple; this year's winner will be decided by public vote and announced at the Bafta film award ceremony on 16 February.
