Venezuela: Death of Beauty Queen in Robbery Rattles Country

Version 0 of 1. A soap opera actress and former Miss Venezuela, Mónica Spear, was shot to death by robbers after her car broke down on a highway, the authorities said Tuesday. Her ex-husband was also killed, and their 5-year-old daughter was wounded. Venezuela has one of the highest rates of violent crime in the region, but the killing of Ms. Spear, 29, provoked a particularly sharp outcry. President Nicolás Maduro called it “a massacre.” Ms. Spear was crowned Miss Venezuela in 2004 and was a soap opera star on the Spanish-language channel Telemundo. A United States citizen, she was in Venezuela on vacation, local media reported. A police official said five suspects had been arrested. |
