A number of people are reported to have been killed or injured in an explosion at a chemical factory in central Japan. At least five people have been killed in an explosion at a chemical factory in central Japan, police say.
The blast occurred at the Mitsubishi Materials chemicals plant in the town of Mie. The blast occurred at a plant run by Mitsubishi Materials in the town of Yokkaichi in Mie prefecture.
A police spokesman, quoted by the AFP news agency, it had been "triggered by some sort of chemical reaction during plant operations". Maintenance crews were working on a heat exchanger used in the production of silicon products when the blast happened, a spokesman at the plant told the AFP news agency.
He went on to say "it seems a number of people were killed or injured", but could not give exact figures. At least 12 people are reported to have been injured.
