Japanese police have captured a 20-year-old rape suspect whose escape from custody sparked a massive manhunt.

Yuta Sugimoto was discovered hiding in a park in Yokohama city, two days after he fled from a prosecutors' office in the nearby city of Kawasaki.

More than 4,000 police officers, along with sniffer dogs and helicopters, were mobilised to track him down.

The escape alarmed residents in Kawasaki. Schoolchildren were urged not to venture out alone.

Yuta Sugimoto's arrest was filmed live on local television. Aerial footage showed dozens of police officers in the park, and a man being led along a wooded path to a waiting police car.

At the time of his escape, Yuta Sugimoto was being questioned on suspicion of being part of a gang that raped and robbed a woman on the streets of Kawasaki, near Tokyo, on 2 January.
