Prosecutors are to take forward a case against a man accused of murdering a schoolgirl more than 27 years ago.

Elaine Doyle, 16, died on her way home from a disco in Greenock, Inverclyde, on 1 June, 1986. Her body was found the next day in a lane off Ardgowan Street.

John Docherty, 49, who was arrested and charged last year, is to appear at the High Court in Glasgow next month.

The Crown Office said the case was the first to come to court following an investigation by its cold case unit.

During a previous appearance at Greenock Sheriff Court in March last year, Mr Docherty made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody.

He was subsequently granted bail.

The 49-year-old was arrested after a police operation in Greenock, which followed renewed appeals about the case, including one on the BBC's Crimewatch programme.
