Brit awards nominations favour young pop acts over old | Brit awards nominations favour young pop acts over old |

With British music frequently accused of being backward-looking, the nominations for this year's Brit awards take a poke back, celebrating youth rather than experience, despite a nod for David Bowie. While the dance duo Disclosure and the band Bastille – who combine melancholy ballads with dancey pop – only recently released their debut albums this year, they are the acts that dominate this year's nominations, with both up for four awards. The two will compete in the categories for British group, British breakthrough artist, British album and British single. Elsewhere, there are nominations for other new artists including Rudimental, London Grammar, Laura Mvula, John Newman and Naughty Boy. | With British music frequently accused of being backward-looking, the nominations for this year's Brit awards take a poke back, celebrating youth rather than experience, despite a nod for David Bowie. That's not to say that the old guard of British music has been overlooked. David Bowie won the Brit for British male solo artist in 1984 and, 30 years on, the singer is again listed in that category. He competes with a group of artists more than four decades his junior: Jake Bugg, John Newman, this year's Mercury prizewinner James Blake, and Tom Odell, who won the Brits critic's choice award – regarded as a predictor of commercial success – at last year's event. Bowie's album The Next Day also picks up a nomination in the British album category. | That's not to say that the old guard of British music has been overlooked. Arctic Monkeys, who are set to open the show on 19 February with a live performance, are another returning act. The Sheffield band have nominations in two most prestigious categories: British band and British album. Should they win both, it will be the first time a band has completed the double on three separate occasions, moving them ahead of Coldplay and Manic Street Preachers. | Arctic Monkeys, who are set to open the show on 19 February with a live performance, are another returning act. The Brits are hardly renowned for their wild and unpredictable choices and this year is no different, with a selection of 2013's most commerical prospects up for awards, including One Direction, Calvin Harris and Daft Punk. However, the appearance of John Grant is perhaps the most unusual of all the nominations. The 45-year-old songwriter's latest album, Pale Green Ghosts, was judged by Guardian critics to be the second best of 2013. Yet he's something of a cult concern compared to the other artists in his category of international male solo artist: Eminem, Bruno Mars, Drake and Justin Timberlake. However, the international categories have often thrown up nominations that might leave the ITV audience watching the ceremony on 19 February a little baffled – the famously stage-shy US singer Cat Power was nominated for international female solo artist both last year and in 2007. | The Brits are hardly renowned for their wild and unpredictable choices and this year is no different, with a selection of 2013's most commerical prospects up for awards, including One Direction, Calvin Harris and Daft Punk. This year's Brits will also see the launch of a new award: British video, which will be voted for by social media users live on the night. Viewers will choose their winner from a shortlist based on high YouTube views, although there are no details just yet of how the voting mechanism will work. The organisers may be wary of vote-rigging by organised blocks of fans, something that famously happened in 1999 when, to the bemusement of more or less everybody watching, the Scottish indie-pop band Belle and Sebastian won the best newcomer award, which was decided by a public vote. The result so incensed Pete Waterman, the Svengali behind the favourites, Steps, that he demanded a recount. | This year's Brits will also see the launch of a new award: British video, which will be voted for by social media users live on the night. This year's ceremony – promised by the organisers, as ever, to be bigger and better than ever before – takes place at the O2 in London on Wednesday 19 February. Ellie Goulding has been announced as the latest live act to perform on the night, joining Katy Perry, Bruno Mars and Rudimental. Goulding won the Brits critics' choice award back in 2010, a prize that this year will be awarded to singer Sam Smith. | This year's ceremony – promised by the organisers, as ever, to be bigger and better than ever before – takes place at the O2 in London on Wednesday 19 February.
