Golden Globes begin in Hollywood Golden Globes: American Hustle wins three awards

The Golden Globes are under way in Hollywood, with a wealth of British stars in the running for glory. American Hustle has been honoured at the Golden Globes in Los Angeles, winning three awards.
The first award of the night went to Jennifer Lawrence for her supporting role in American Hustle. The 1970s-set crime movie was named best film, comedy or musical, while its stars Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence also won prizes for their roles.
Jacqueline Bisset was the first British actress to win an award for her part in BBC drama Dancing on the Edge. Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto picked up the best actor and supporting actor in a drama prizes for the biographical Dallas Buyers Club.
12 Years a Slave is a leading contender with seven nominations, including a best director nod for Steve McQueen and star Chiwetel Ejiofor. Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave was named best film drama.
Dame Judi Dench and Emma Thompson lead the hopes in the acting stakes, with Dame Helen Mirren also nominated for her TV work. However, it was the only award the movie picked up, after going into evening with seven nominations.
ITV's Downton Abbey is also up for best TV drama. Both McQueen and stars Michael Fassbender and Chiwetel Ejiofor had received nods.
The Globes recognise both cinema and small screen achievements, while its film awards encompass both drama and musical or comedy genres. Cate Blanchett collected the best actress in a drama trophy for Woody Allen film Blue Jasmine, while Alfonso Cuaron was named best director for space movie Gravity.
The award winners are decided by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Jacqueline Bisset was the only British actor to win an award for her part in BBC drama Dancing on the Edge.
Heist movie American Hustle also has seven nominations, including best picture and best director for David O Russell. The TV categories featured a number of double award winners.
Dench, Thompson and Kate Winslet all feature in the best dramatic actress category, but Australian actress Cate Blanchett is seen as a solid bet to take the trophy for her role as a disgraced socialite in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine. Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra was named best TV movie/mini-series, with Michael Douglas picking up the best actor in a TV movie, series or mini-series.
Sandra Bullock completes the contest with her performance as an astronaut under pressure in Gravity. Breaking Bad also came away with two awards including best drama series and best actor in a drama for its star Bryan Cranston.
Britain's Ejiofor could take away the prize for best dramatic actor for 12 Years a Slave, and faces countryman Idris Elba in the same category for his portrayal of Nelson Mandela in Long Walk to Freedom. It was the first Golden Globe for Cranston, having been nominated for the same award every year since 2011. He was also nominated in 2003 for his role in comedy Malcolm in the Middle.
The pair are also pitched against one another in a television acting category for their work in Dancing on the Edge and Luther. Police caper Brooklyn Nine-Nine also collected two prizes including best comedy or musical TV series and best actor in a comedy for Andy Samberg.
Dame Helen could win honours for her work in a TV drama about the life of music producer Phil Spector, while Helena Bonham-Carter is feted for playing Elizabeth Taylor in Burton and Taylor. Amy Poehler won best actress in a TV comedy or musical for her role in Parks and Recreation, while Robin Wright was named best actress in a drama series.
Welsh-born Christian Bale has been placed on the best actor in a musical or comedy shortlist for his role in American Hustle, a film which could bring acting honours to Amy Adams and Bradley Cooper.
