New signs and cameras are being installed along the M6 in Lancashire as part of a £1.7m project to better warn drivers about congestion.

The Highways Agency is installing four electronic message signs around junction 33 at Galgate.

CCTV cameras will be mounted on them, enabling traffic officers to monitor and manage tailbacks, the agency said.

Clearing bottlenecks at the junction could improve safety and boost the local economy, officers added.

Work to install the signs and cameras is due to be completed by 14 March and could cause delays in the meantime.

Funding for the work has come from the government's £170m Local Pinch Point Fund, which aims to remove bottlenecks on the highway network.
