Red Hot Chili Peppers to play Super Bowl half-time

Red Hot Chili Peppers will join Grammy-winning singer Bruno Mars as half-time performers at this year's Super Bowl in America.

Mars made the announcement during the broadcast of a National Football League (NFL) play-off game between the Seattle Seahawks and New Orleans Saints.

Super Bowl XLVIII takes place at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on 2 February.

The band have been signed up to broaden the audience for the half-time show.

Red Hot Chili Peppers have sold more than 60 million albums, have six Grammy Awards and entered the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

Mars was named as headliner for the half-time show in September, which is now considered one of the most coveted spots in entertainment.

More than 110.5 million viewers watched last year's broadcast from New Orleans, which featured Beyonce.

She was joined by fellow Destiny's Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams.

They re-united for versions of Bootylicious, Independent Women Part I and Single Ladies.

Other recent half-time performers have been Madonna (2012), Black Eyed Peas with Usher and Slash (2011), The Who (2010) and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (2009).

American broadcaster NBC was forced to apologise in 2012 after M.I.A. put her middle finger up during her half-time performance.

She made the gesture and swore during a performance of Madonna single, Give Me All Your Luvin'.

Janet Jackson also had what was termed a "wardrobe malfunction" eight years before that.

The brief exposure of the singer's breast in 2004 during a performance with Justin Timberlake got then broadcaster CBS in trouble with America's Federal Communications Commission.

Super Bowl XLVIII will be show live on Channel 4 and Sky Sports on 2 February
