Congo: Fighters Quit, U.N. Says
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/15/world/africa/congo-fighters-quit-un-says.html Version 0 of 1. The head of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo said Tuesday that 8,000 fighters affiliated with a variety of armed factions had surrendered since the M23 rebel group was routed in November. Among them are the Hutu militias that Rwanda holds responsible for the genocide 20 years ago. Martin Kobler, the United Nations’ special representative for Congo, said about 50 members of a Hutu group, Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, had surrendered in each of the last two months alone, steadily diminishing what he said was a 1,800-strong force. He said his peacekeepers were focused on rooting out the rest, but warned that the group was not likely to be eliminated by military means alone. |
